Psychological Safety

Harvard Business Review have published a good article following a two year research project by Google on High Performing Teams. Within business this is important but it would be easy to say that it is not relevant to you if you are not a manager within an organisation. However, teams can cover families, groups of friends, plus of course sports teams. The principles are the same. If a person feels they can make a mistake without being punished for it then they will grow and learn from their mistakes. Imagine a child putting their shoes on the wrong foot the first time they try; if they are punished they are less likely to try and dress themselves again.

There is a need within all organisations, and groups of people to provide a culture where is it OK to make a mistake, where there will be support, encouragement and gentle correction is where learning and growth can take place.
